Colby College Cotter Union

"The MRI suite was designed with a diverse mixture of wall, cabinet and floor finishes, including a fiber optic 'star filled sky' in the ceiling above the MRI. It all came together with surgical precision under OAI’s leadership."

Project Highlights
  • Project Value: $7.25 million
  • Size: 21,000 square feet
  • Timeline: 2006/2007

The new Cotter Union student center at Colby College is a work of art. But between non-geometric shapes and the slope of the land, nothing is perpendicular. For example: the roof is an angular slice of a cylindrical shape, installed at an angle.

Another challenge presented by this job has been the ledge that runs through the campus. It has required blasting within inches of existing facilities and utilities. The team has performed extensive excavation—rerouting the college’s entire subterranean infrastructure.

The new facility is home to student activities offices, multipurpose spaces, the student post office and a new 7,000-square foot meeting area, “the heart” of campus life, which features a café, pub and coffee bar.
